L192 Mid-course review

March 16th, 2012

I got my 3rd assignment back yesterday and filled in my mid-course review today and it occurred to me that maybe some sort of journal might be helpful to record my thoughts and flag up areas I need to work on. It seems to me that this is the perfect place.

The course so far…

I’m showing very untypical tenacity with this course! I started a week before the official opening date and remain a week to ten days ahead. Just comfortable-and allows for any mishaps. I’m enjoying it a lot and seem to be learning. Pascale and I are both aware of the progress I’m making.

The OU have ‘funding issues’ in September in as much as they have to come into line with other universities. Transitional funding is available for existing students, even those claiming grants, so the only effect to me is just that I’ve had to tie myself down to doing a degree and I have to finish it by the end of 2017. All this is do-able. All I need to supply is the brain!

I’d plotted out a path which uses my Creative Writing points and is a mix of French and English, but just recently I’ve developed a hankering to do a language from scratch. I’m seriously looking at Spanish. I’ve started having a bit of a look at a BBC beginners course which is presented in the form of a mystery story. I’ll follow that to help me make up my mind.

Now a few stats to round of this intro to my ‘Study Journal’. Tomorrow I’ll do a roundup of this past week.

TMA01-100%

TMA02-100%

TMA03-93%

I’ll take that! My tutor highlighted a couple of passages in ‘Success with Languages’ that I should read as part of the feedback from TMA03. They are to do with how to pick yourself up and keep going if your assignment marks are disappointing.

A thought or two about Tutorials. I haven’t been able to attend the evening face-to-face tutorials in Cambridge as it would be impossible to get home at that time in the evening. The Elluminate ones are a bit like watching «la peinture» dry. Out of the hour and a half you probably get 10 minutes attention if you’re lucky. More frustrating than useful. There were only three of us last time. I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up just Sue Webster and I. Why do I keep showing up? I think it’s taken into account in the great final reckoning.
